James E. Baker, PhD
I have a PhD and MA in Geography from University of Nebraska with a focus on the cultural and political geography of the former Soviet Union. My research focuses on the visual and emotional dimensions of place, culture, and politics in Europe and the former Soviet Union, and I read widely and have published on topics such as the affective politics of COVID-19, place-based discourses of craft brewing in Europe, the visual politics of protest in Greece, and cartographic anxieties in the South Caucasus. I’ve also reviewed and been awarded several prestigious fellowships, including a Title VIII award and Critical Language Scholarship through the U.S. Department of State, and several awards to study and present in places as varied as Kharkiv, Ukraine and University of Essex in the United Kingdom.
Prior to graduate school, I taught ESL courses to international students in Florida, served as a language consultant to business professionals across New Jersey, worked as an international student advisor in Cambridge, MA, and taught citizenship courses to aspiring U.S. citizens in Lincoln, Nebraska before relocating back home to New York City in 2022. Here, I’ve taught world history and European geography courses to undergraduates at St. Francis College while rekindling my passion for working with students and scholars from around the world as an international student advisor at the CUNY Graduate Center.
My love for working with international and early career scholars has led me to the world of developmental and copyediting. I’m more than happy to help you improve your writing across the social sciences and humanities: my passion is helping international graduate students and early career scholars hone their English language writing and presenting skills to improve that dissertation chapter, revise (and resubmit!) that first (or second!) peer-reviewed journal article, and ace that critical conference slide deck and presentation. I also love working with scholars on grant and fellowship applications to help you advance your research, as well as advising on job materials for opportunities in and outside of the academy.
