Kelly A. Clancy, PhD

I have a PhD in political science from Rutgers University with a focus in comparative politics, and an MA in Communication Studies from Texas State University with a focus on political rhetoric (my CV is here). I earned tenure and served as department chair in the Political Science at Nebraska Wesleyan University, a small liberal arts school in Lincoln Nebraska, before relocating back to New York City to focus on my love of writing —both my own writing projects and making other peoples’ writing stronger. I’ve spent the past few years immersed in workshops on developmental editing and creative non-fiction writing.

Research - My own research focuses on social movements and contentious politics in the US and Europe, and I read and publish widely in journals in both political science as well as across social sciences and humanities (see publication list here). This means I can help you with your writing in a variety of disciplines and sub-disciplines in social science and humanities.

Books - I can help you navigate the academic book publishing world as well. My latest book, Democracy: A Love Letter (and a guide for everyone fighting to save it) was published by Epilogue Publishing in 2024. I published my first book, The Politics of Genetically Modified Organisms in the United States and Europe, with Palgrave in 2016.

Grants and Fellowships - I’ve served as a prestigious fellowship advisor, and helped people with winning applications for fellowships such as Fulbrights, Borens, and NSFs. I can help with applications for major grants and fellowships in the social sciences and humanities. I’ve also been the recipient of prestigious fellowships both in the United States and Europe.

Consulting and Writing - A major focus of my scholarly work was on diversity and inclusion in political science pedagogy; I’ve worked with individuals and departments, and hosted conferences, equity in higher ed.

In addition to my scholarly writing and editing work, I write a newsletter about politics and parenting, and I’ve written reports and website copy for a variety of nonprofits. You can see an example of my most recent nonprofit work here.

Training - As a lifelong educator, I’ve immersed myself in continuing education to become a thoughtful editor. I’ve taken courses on non-fiction and fiction developmental editing, copywriting, academic book proposals, and fiction line editing. I have a certificate in copyediting from Writer’s Digest University. I also frequently take writing courses, including creative non-fiction, memoir, essays, and habits of writing. These courses have provided me with a high degree of insight into the best practices of developmental and stylistic editing. I am a member of the Editorial Freelancer’s Association.

What else - I am the parent to three adventurous kids who love eating tacos and finding local Austin swimming holes in the summer, and walking across bridges and eating neighborhood Georgian food the rest of the year.
